BackgammonMasters Conducts Currency Study
Online backgammon site BackgammmonMasters.com has announced that most of its non-US players are unaware of the ‘Linden’ currency offered by the Second Life virtual world.
In addition, only two of these communicated an interest in using the virtual currency to play on BackgammonMasters.com. The site concluded that its players are not willing to use the ‘Linden’ currency in lieu of more traditional types as participants cited playing for non-virtual currencies as more enticing than using the virtual brand for game transactions including making bets and withdrawing winnings.
As part of the survey, BackgammonMasters.com stated that any ‘Linden’ winnings could be cashed out for real currencies including Hong Kong, Canadian, Australian and American dollars, British Pounds, Czech Koruna, Danish Kroner, Hungarian Forint, Japanese Yen, Norwegian Krone, Polish Zloty, Swedish Krona, Swiss Franc and the South African Rand.
BackgammmonMasters.com stated that customers make deposits and withdrawals in their native currencies on the site, eliminating poor exchange rates and high bank charges. In addition, multi-currency deposits are acceptable and converted automatically by the site into US currency that can then be used to play backgammon, poker, blackjack and perudo.

I'm another one who hasn't heard of this before, it came as quite a surprise to me. I am curious as to both how it works and what the point is of using it-I guess I have to look into this to understand more.

I'll have to admit that it's not just the non-US players as I was unaware of the virtual currency as well. I'll have to agree with the results of the survey, though - playing for virtual money doesn't have the same feel as playing for real money.

I recall learning about Lindens on Second Life on a TV show, maybe CSI? I definitely can see where people aren't exactly aware of all the workings of such a complex environment though. Could be a much needed media campaign.

Well sheesh, I'm a US player, and I wasn't aware of Lindens. Is it unnecessary for US players, since the site is a US site and deals in USD? It seems like it'd be a good deal for non-US players.

Purple is on to something there. If they want more people to know about it and understand it, then maybe it's time they actually got the word out there more. It may not be enticing to everyone, but it is to some, so it could be worth it.
