WSOP #45, $50,000 H.O.R.S.E: Day 1 Starts At A Canter

The $50,000 H.O.R.S.E.

world championship event is the most star-studded tournament during the Series. This year 148 players stumped up for the biggest buy-in event in their bid to win the Chip Reese Memorial Trophy.

With blinds now 90 minutes, and the game changed every eight hands across the five disciplines on offer: Limit Hold''em, Omaha Eight-or-Better, Razz, Seven-Card Stud and Seven-Card Stud Eight-or-Better.

With so many great players in the tournament, it doesn’t take long before you end up with a great-looking rail as well. Some of those eliminated in Day 1 include David Williams, Amnon Filippi, Philippe Rouas, Shunjiro Uchida, and Phil Hellmuth.

Of course, while the rail looked pretty tough after a while, some of the tables were even sicker looking. Table 13 – which was particularly unlucky if you were sat on it – had a particularly scary line up. Fancy having this lot at your home game!

Seat 1: Ralph Perry

Seat 2: John Hennigan

Seat 3: Dewey Tomko (who didn’t stay for long as they ballsed up the seating. No, that seat was actually Robert Williamson III)

Seat 4: Phil “OMGClayAiken” Galfond

Seat 5: Daniel Negreanu

Seat 6: Phil Ivey

Seat 7: Perry Friedman

Seat 8: Tom “Durrrr” Dwan

A real mix of old school versus new, all on one table. All the players made it through to Day 2, where they’ll be drawn into new seats. I’m sure that will be a relief to some of them.

The form man in this event, and someone who has had an incredible 2008 WSOP already, is David Singer. His chances of making a third successive final table though are in danger though, after he ended the day on less than the 50,000 he’d started with. Other players in a spot of bother are Andy Black (24,300), Toto Leonidas (22,100) and David Levi (31,100).

Last year’s one-two, Deeb and Fitoussi, are both in healthier shape, and will hope to make a good run during Day 2 to help them repeat their respective feats of last year.

The overnight chip leaders look like this:

Chris Reslock: 225,000

James Mackey: 214,000

Pat Pezzin: 200,400

Joe Cassidy: 198,700

Ralph Perry: 195,300

Stephen Wolff: 192,700

Fu Wong: 188,100

Douglas Ganger: 183,200

Bill Chen: 182,500

Tad Jurgens: 172,700

Wow, I really can't imagine how thrilling it must be to not only be that good but to be able to play with all those other really good players. All those game types, and rules to remember must make quite alot to handle.
