Stan James Avoid Payout after England Defeat
Gibraltar-based bookmaker Stan James narrowly missed taking their biggest ever hit when England's Rugby World Cup hopes were dashed by the Springboks.
Stan James had agreed to refund all single outright bets if a Home Nation won the cup, and punters were keen to take up the offer. However, England’s defeat meant that their hopes of cashing in were crushed.
Chief Exec Peter Fisher said "We’ve won the battle with our punters this time around but it was a close-run thing. After the first South Africa game, I thought we were home and hosed to clear up on anyone backing England. But fair play - they came back and gave us a bit of a scare, to say the very least!"
