This Month's Player: Macadam
How long have you been playing online?
For about 2 years now.
Why do you enjoy playing online?
Largely because I can use my natural poker face (think Jim Carrey), and shout at people without getting into trouble. It’s also a good apprenticeship if you’re a rookie.
What games do you play?
Almost exclusively blackjack, although I did enter a game of Hold’em blackjack by accident once…that was a dark day in my young life.
What do you enjoy about gambling.com compared with other sites?
I just think it’s an interesting site, especially since it’s been done up. I really like the sports news sections, it’s an unexpected pleasure.
What do you think of the tournaments at gambling.com?
They are pretty good, but I enjoy the site as a whole more than anything else, and of course the magazine, so naturally it’s a privilege to be in it!
Do you have a particular strategy when you play online?
Unless you’re playing for relatively medium to high stakes it’s difficult to work a strategy online, especially poker, because you get so many idiots either calling everything or going all-in the moment they join the table. Playing a relatively tight-aggressive game seems to have worked so far.
Do you have any gambling superstitions?
Probably too many! If I’m playing online I have to sit near an open window, and if I’m about to play an online tournament I’ll usually go through a variety of stretches and lunges about 5 minutes before, usually to the Star Wars theme tune, to get myself centred. There is less scope for this in live tournaments, but I do listen to it on repeat on my iPod.
Do you listen to music while you play at gambling.com? If so, what are your favourite albums/artists?
The Star Wars theme tune again. Not so much with gambling.com actually. I’ve usually got REO Speedwagon, Frankie Goes to Hollywood or Wings blaring out of the stereo.
Do you play at any other online casinos?
William Hill mainly, although I do dabble at PokerStars as well. I do a bit of sportsbetting at William Hill and Paddy Power, although I’ve been unsuccessful to date. I prefer gambling.com for games other than poker.
Have you tried your luck at Texas Hold‘em?
Yes, I’ve been playing for about 6 years now. My Dad taught me when I was 28 and I got immediately hooked. He learnt from his father, who learnt his father before him. It’s a generational thing in our family. It’s a great game; easy to learn– difficult to master.
At which time of the day do you like to play?
I’m a night owl. I play more or less every day, starting at about 8pm, right through until 3 or 4 in the morning. I live on my own so it’s a therapeutic exercise for me, and I love the social aspect.
What would be your ultimate gambling weekend away?
Well I think Vegas is a bit obvious, and I’ve been many times already. Probably to Monte Carlo for the Formula One Grand Prix, taking in the casinos etc…
Do you have any other hobbies?
When I’m not gambling or playing poker I like to relax by go-karting. I also like swimming, horse riding and going to the cinema.
What is your favourite movie?
Without question–Star Wars. I loved Return of the Jedi most when I was younger, although the Empire Strikes Back grew on me as I grew up. I think it’s almost a comfort blanket for me, as watching the early films takes me back to when I was a kid, when I wanted to believe that Luke Skywalker, Jedis and lightsabers actually existed. Also, Darth Vader is one of cinema’s most iconic characters.
Finally, as our ‘Player of the Month’, what would you like to see added to gambling.com?
Well I’m still familiarising myself with the new site, which I think is great, so I’d just say more of the same really. More freerolls would be nice!
What would you like to see in the gambling.com Magazine?
I’ve enjoyed the recent sports features so again, more of that, and more casino strategy articles.
