Chinese Poker - Some Common Variations

There are some common variations of Chinese poker, and most of these variations have to do with either the scoring system or the recognition of ‘clean sweeps’, which are hands that are automatically declared winners before they are even set. Let’s take a look at how these different variations are used.

Although the 1-3 scoring system is probably the most common, some variations include the 2-4 scoring system, where a player gets two points for winning two out of three hands and a bonus point for winning all three, and the 1-6 scoring system, where you get one point for winning two out of three hands, but six points for winning all three. Additionally, there are variations whereby) a player must pay each player who has a hand that outranks him. Thus, if you had the fourth best ‘back hand’ (or middle hand, or front hand), then you would be obligated to pay a point not only to the player with the highest ranking back hand, but also to the players with the second and third ranking hands as well. The player with the third ranking hand, in turn, would have to pay both the second and highest ranking hands.

The ‘clean sweep’ variation allows a player to collect up to thirteen points from each player if he is dealt a ‘sweeper’. The most commonly recognized sweepers are as follows.

  1. The Dragon - a 13 card hand with no pairs. Each player pays the holder 13 points
  2. Thirteen Points - a 13 card hand with all red cards, or all black cards. Each player pays the holder
  3. Twelve Points - a 13 card hand with either 12 red cards or 12 black cards. Each player pays the holder 3 points
  4. Six Pairs - a 13 card hand that contains six pairs. Each player pays the holder 3 points
  5. Three straights - a 13 card hand that contains two five card straights, and one three card straight. Each player pays the holder 3 points
  6. Three flushes - a 13 card hand that contains two five card flushes, and one three card flush. Each player pays the holder 3 points.

If a player has a sweeper he must declare the hand before he sets the hand. Otherwise the hand will play in the usual fashion. Additionally, a player who incorrectly declares a clean sweep will be penalized three points.
