Top Five Mistakes You Can Make in Poker
- The first mistake is playing loose from an early position. This can be very damaging and is more likely going to hurt you when you happen to have a very weak hand. If you are playing in early position you need to play much tighter, and you also need to ensure that you are being very conservative in your bids. If you are unsure about what you are doing and think that you have a horrible hand, take the opportunity to fold. In contrast, if you are in a later position you can get away with playing much looser because you are able to observe the behavior of the other players before you make any decisions regarding bets and hands.
- The next common mistake is deciding to continue playing because you feel that you are owed a win, or because you feel that you must continue playing to make up money you have lost. If you could not afford to lose the money, you should have never approached the table. You are not going to have a successful game if all you are doing is attempting to chase your losses. Your best option is to merely give up and walk away from the table when you run out of money and take the time to improve your playing in the future to avoid this mistake.
- Another mistake that is quite common is bluffing a player who is highly inexperienced. Many times these lesser players will simply not have the knowledge of when they should fold and instead will challenge you. This could be very dangerous, especially if you are bluffing with a horrible hand. Watch to determine the skill level of players before you ever consider using a bluff.
- New players tend to also make the mistake of not knowing their position on the table. This can happen to those who are more experienced as well, but is not as common of a problem. Knowing your position on the table allows you to watch and see what other players are doing for each round before you actually have your turn. Of course, there is always the risk that they are bluffing, but you can usually gather good information this way if you are observant.
- The last biggest mistake that you can make is both related to money. Of course not watching your bankroll can put you out of a game very quickly which results in lost money and in addition not knowing the odds associated with your hand could have you placing a foolish bet. Watch your bankroll closely and always know the odds for the hand you are holding. If you are aware of the odds and watch your bankroll you can play more games, and be able to really keep going while others are struggling. This will allow you to maximize your potential profits and put more money in your pocket.
