Bad Blackjack Strategies

Many beginners sitting down for the first time with limited bankroll and little blackjack experience have a host of bad blackjack strategies. Here are some to look out for and to definitely avoid.

Do As The Dealer Does

This strategy has a deceptive ring of truth to it. Since a beginner player feels that the dealer is always taking the money in the end and does not have to do anything, they just hit until they get past 16. The rules also favour the player hitting blackjack since it pays 3 to 2. All things being even, this would be a highly optimal strategy, but unfortunately, a casino does not allow all things to be even. Since the player always busts first, the dealer busts second, the dealer has the ultimate advantage. With such a strategy, the player will bust 28.2% of the time, so a terrible strategy to adopt.

No Bust Strategy

This strategy involves a player not taking any cards if they are at risk of busting. That means never hitting with a hard 12 or greater. The appeal is there as a very safe strategy. It is very frustrating when you hit your 13 against the dealer¡¯s 7, bust your hand and then watch the dealer proceed to bust their own hand. This strategy gives away too much since much of the time, you will be sitting on 12, or 13 or 14, and since the dealer will only bust 28.2% of the time, the other 70% of the times you will be beat since the dealer is standing on 17 or higher.

Playing On A Hunch

This strategy is for all players who believe they have a six sense for what will happen next or whether they will wind the hand or not. Sometimes they double down on 11 sometimes they do not bother. Again, this is not perfect strategy, best to stay away from just playing the hunch.

Always use basic strategy to minimise your loses and maximise your gains in blackjack.
