The World Snooker Championship is still only in its second round but there have already been some weird and wonderful results in round one. This mas made many people wonder how on earth we can forecast the winner for this year. There have been a number of shocks–ex-champions squeezing through and general confusion as to who is actually the favourite.

News that Ken Doherty has been knocked out by a Chinese qualifier has just hit the wires, meaning that three ex-world champions have now bitten the dust in round one. However, the demise of Graeme Dott, who has been diagnosed with depression. Dott made the brave decision to come to the Championships despite his mental state, and while he was beaten in the first round by Joe Perry there are signs that he is on the way back.

While we have ex-champions falling like nine-pins, the ever durable Stephen Hendry just keeps plodding along with a 10—9 victory over Northern Ireland’s Mark Allen. Hendry has not reached the highs of ten years ago when there was nobody in the sport who could really touch him, but he is still there. The more experienced stars that fall along the way, the more vital his depth of experience will become.

Over the last few years we have seen a whole host of new and exciting snooker stars come and go. There has been a huge influx of Chinese players as well as major changes in the rankings. If you were to compare today’s second round fixtures to those of only a decade ago, the majority of those players are long gone.

Snooker seems to becoming more of a younger person’s game, but you can never write off the experience some of the older players have. While there are big wins to be had betting on snooker, you really do need to be close to the sport and know who is on the up and who has seen better days.

It looks as if snooker is becoming one of the hardest sports to predict.
