Is A Move To Reinstate Internet Gambling Picking Up Pace?
Lo and behold, the US economy moves into recession and we start to see signs that State and central Government resistance to online gambling is crumbling. So are we now on the verge of seeing a return to the fold for online casinos and other similar gambling ventures?
As if by magic, the US business sector starts to struggle and look for new income streams and we hear talk that internet gambling may very well be back on the agenda. Leaked opinions and views from inside congress have indicated that a blanket ban on internet gambling is neither feasible nor legal in law because of the many loop holes and discrepancies already in place.
Many of those outside of the US will not be aware of the fact that the US authorities still allow state lotteries and horse gambling companies to operate online, within the law, while banning any other form of online gambling. While they will argue that it has not been ‘banned’, they have affectively cut off the industry’s life line by ordering credit card companies to refuse access to funds for online gambling.
Prior to the changes, the industry was said to be worth something in the region of $16 billion a year, a nice income stream which would be more than welcomed in the current environment. It has also come to notice that the change in regulations was primarily aimed at overseas companies who were seen to be invading ‘America’s patch’ and taking business from their high profile casino industry.
As we approach the finishing line for the appointment of presidential candidates and the changes which will follow, is this a time for a clean sweep of the online gambling laws? Will the incoming president seek to gain favour with the online gambling sector?
Time will tell, but this is America and anything can and does happen!
