Kevin Keegan’s Geordie Gamble Pays Off

When “King Kev” came back to Newcastle to take up the managers reigns again there were many whose thoughts drifted back the 1990s and the time when their beloved team nearly won the Premiership, instead being pipped at the post by Manchester United. For many the return of “King Kev” was a chance to dream!

However, Keegan’s first seven games brought no wins for the Newcastle United faithful and just as it seemed that they were starting to question his reappointment he hit on a plan–a big gamble–but one that might just work.

Football is a game of chance a game of tactical nous. While Keegan’s abilities in this area of the managerial game have been questioned in the past, he pulled a rabbit out of the hat this time. Moving to a more attacking set-up to go for goals, he employed his three main strikers from the start of each game after the barren seven match run. Hey presto, the goals flowed, the points came in and the fans were firmly back on the side of “King Kev”!

This just goes to show that in order to be successful in UK football you need to have nerves of steel. You need to be focused and above all you need to know when to gamble with something out of the ordinary. Football is littered with managers who have been happy to sit back, while many up and coming managers are happy to take a chance and do something a little different in pursuit of the trophies and the glory.

This is why football is such a popular sport in places such as the UK, why football betting income continues to power ahead and above all why figures like “King Kev” keep coming back time and time again to their adoring masses. As they say, football is a funny old game!
