Knowing Your Poker Talk

With online poker comes a lot of poker acronyms that take time to be learnt and understood. You might see them in a chat box whilst playing in your favourite poker room or you might see it on online blogs whenever they are talking about poker strategy or hand histories. Here are a few of the most popular poker acronyms, make sure you learn them all.

  • AI - All In - To go all in
  • AIPF - All In Pre Flop
  • ATC - Any Two Cards - Usually talking about going all in.
  • BB - Big Blind
  • C - Bet - Continuation Bet - Bluff after the flop that follows a pre flop raise
  • Cc - Check Check
  • c/c - Check call any bet
  • CO - Cut Off - Position to the right of the dealer
  • EV - Expected value - The calculated long term profitability of a particular move
  • FE - Fold Equity - The equity that comes with making another player fold a hand
  • FWIW - For What It’s Worth - Usually to finish off a sentence about one’s personal opinion on a play.
  • GG - Good game
  • HJ - High Jack - To the right of the cutoff
  • HU - Heads Up
  • IMO - In My Opinion - Common courtesy when providing one’s own opinion on how a hand should have been played out.
  • ITM - In the money
  • LAG - Loose aggressive player
  • MTT - Multi Table Tournament - Tournament with more than one table
  • NH - Nice Hand
  • OOP - Out of Position - To play a hand from early position against another player.
  • PLO8 - Pot Limit Omaha Hi/Lo
  • ROI - Return On Investment
  • SNG - Sit N Go Tournament
  • SS - Short Stack
  • TAG - Tight Aggressive Player
  • TPBK - Top Pair Best Kicker
  • TPGK - Top Pair Good Kicker
  • TPWK - Top Pair Weak Kicker
  • UTG - Under The Gun - Player to the left of the big blind
  • VB - Value Bet - A bet designed to represent a small bet that is asking for a call off a big hand.
