Shaking The Habit

Whenever one has participated in a particular activity over a period of time, it is only natural that all the little nuances, actions, sights and decisions become very familiar. Even if it has many complex steps and stages, it can still become a routine if practiced over and over again. This also leads very quickly to boredom and leading to us trying new things.

Doing new things might mean trying to master a new type of game, switching the time of day we might gamble, finding a new sport to watch. Being on the learning curve of a new activity is always particularly exciting and keeps one interested with their new hobby or obsession. But what about the previous activity that we took so long to master? All the routines in that activity have been engrained in our minds and can be run on autopilot, do we just give up all that we learned and applied just because we got bored of it?

Here in lies one of the great dilemmas of human life. Do we choose to always keep ourselves excited by finding new things to do, or do we just sit at the optimal level of one particular activity? This dilemma is universal across many disciplines including martial arts, business, sports, music, crafts, cooking, etc. How do all the other champions stop themselves from getting bored?

There is a common saying by the veterans and past champions of any discipline and that is to continually refine your game. Find new ways to improve and set new goals and challenges to keep yourself motivated. Sometimes trying to learn a new game is a distraction more than anything, so best to always work on yourself before trying to work on something new.
