So Is The FA Cup Final A Sure Thing For Portsmouth?

As the thrills and spills of an action packed weekend come to a close it is Cardiff and Portsmouth who will battle it out for the FA Cup on Saturday 17th May at the new Wembley stadium. While Pompey are 3/1 on with bookies to lift the Cup, and Cardiff City a distant 5/2, is it really such a clear cut affair? Have we seen the last of the shocks from this season’s FA Cup competition?

Those who are sitting back and counting their Portsmouth winnings before the event, may well have to think again. ÊThere is no doubt that Portsmouth are the team to beat on paper, playing a team a division lower than them, but this years FA Cup competition has been literally one in a million Êwith premiership teams falling like flies. The beauty of the competition is the fact that we have seen so many shock results over the years, and while the giant killings may have reduced in number some what, this year has been a step back to the glory days of 20 years ago.

Many people also forget that while it is great to lift the trophy, the FA Cup also offers direct entry into Europe and the potential riches from playing against Europe’s elite. ÊImagine what impact that would have on Portsmouth, and then times it by 100 for the impact on a Cardiff team who are possibly on the verge of administration if forced to repay a multi-million loan later this year. The glory days of the FA Cup seems to be back again and this romantic of old Cups is still going strong.

This year’s tournament will not only give the lower teams heart for next year, but it is sure to attract yet more viewers from around the world to sample the joys of “Cup Final” day, and the ups and downs which follow this Cup wherever it goes!
