Why Are They So Good?

So Manchester United lifts the Premier League trophy again. Why exactly are they so good? What makes this team one of the most dominant sporting clubs in the world? A suitable word for it all would have to be management. With it’s signature red jersey renown to all over the world, the rush of their success started in the early 90s after Alex Ferguson had already been in charge of the club for a few years, with only mediocre results. A subsequent listing of the club in the early 90s brought extra funds to the club, which kicked off its big signings that proved so significant to their success.

1991 saw the arrival of Danish goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, which improved that particular season to a runner up finish. Next was the 1.2million pound deal, which secured Eric Cantona to the club. With the world’s best striker and the world’s best keeper, all they had to do was protect the keeper and keep feeding the striker. This started their dominance of the Premier League from 1992. More big name singings like Andy Cole and the emergence from the youth team of David Beckham, Gary Neville, Phil Neville and Paul Scholes continued their success.

The lesson learnt from this is that good management will often determine the amount of success in a team. The culture of a club, the values they live by and how they pick players will usually translate to success. A strong juniors program always produces good long term results for a team. The names of Beckham, Neville and Scholes all were worn on the English jersey in subsequent world cup campaigns. It is not the easiest model to follow, since all this good management does require lots of money, a strong brand and investors happy to sign cheques to purchase the best players.
