I find that by being observant of the other players I can generally tell what they are most likely to do or if they are bluffing. I pay close attention to them for several hands and keep my bets low. Once I have a handle on their reactions, then I up the ante a bit. Does anyone else do this and does it help you win as much as it seems to me?

I do this when playing against my spouse, still yet to catch on four years into our marriage. Funny though when I win and get the reaction of "whaaaaaaaaat"?

LOL! for how many years of playing with your spouse I am pretty sure that you already know what does all your spouse's gestures means.

This is all well and good unless the person you are playing against someone who is better at bluffing than you are. I would personally be careful about relying on that or you might just come unstuck!

I usually don't pick up on people in the first couple of rounds playing with them. I like to watch other players before I play them a few times. I get a general sense of their playing style fairly early on. If I watch long enough though I can often pick up on some quirk or something that gives them away. At that point look out. I'm a shark in the water.
