Some people believe knowing maths is not important when playing poker, but a key attribute of a great poker player is being able to calculate the general probabilities of the game.
For example, the probability of hitting a set when holding a pocket pair is said to be about 1 in 8.5.

| For cards, you may mean counting? But overall, yes, math does matter, but you won't be able to do any of those calculations in your head. So again it comes back to skill and yes, even luck combined to make a winning player

| Although poker does a lot math principles, it doesn't prove that you would definitely win if you know math. It does help in knowing the probabilities but I also believe that it always comes down to being lucky and being a good bluffer!

I do agree though. Being good at math in your head or counting cards only takes into account facts, not the emotions and betting strategies of the other players, or luck.

| I don't think that maths comes into it at all. You can ultimately learn what all the odds are, just learn them rote and never have to work out a single thing.

| To be a good poker player you do need to know the probabilities, and yes those can be memorized. But the probabilities are just part of the package. You need to use that information along with what you know about your opponents and other poker strategies to become an overall good player.

| to know probabilities you need know nothing about math. Probability is only a part of the game. If you are only good at mathematics you probably won't make a good poker player...you will need other talents

| If you happen to see the movie entitled "21", a student there who is good in math were trained to combine his knowledge to make it big in black jack. This is a good example. The movie by the way is based on a true story.
