| I've never played in a tournament "on-land", but I've been seeing a lot of stuff about online tournaments with great jackpots and low buy ins. Is it even worth playing? Can an average player win?

| Do you mean average player or average person? I think the average person could win but they need to be an above average player. I wouldn't bother with a tournament unless you have confidence in your poker skills.

| I think that anyone can win. I have never been in a tournament either, but what would make someone else win over you? Skill or luck?

Just watch the World Series of Poker and you can see that anyone can win. I also agree that you have to have confidence in your game and play very tight until you are in the money. You must not be intimidated by the big names and pros as well just in case they end up at your table.
