I'm looking at having about 40 people over to have a poker tournament. I'm thinking having $50 buy in and $5 of that going to the refreshments and the rest into the purse. I'm thinking of having money paid out to the top 4 finishers with the winner getting 50%, Second getting 25%, third 15% and fourth 10%. Does that sound reasonable? So far people like the idea. Has anyone hosted a nice size tournament before?

| That would be a bit of a high buy in for my circle of friends, but if your friends are willing to front that much, it sounds like a great idea. I've never hosted a tournament, nor attended one, but it sounds like a great idea and I may try in the future.

That sounds like it could be pretty cool and fun. I wouldn’t issue such a high buy-in myself though. My friends and I arent exactly made of money.

| Sounds like fun, however, you can get into trouble if all the buy-in isn't paid back to the players. If you take any portion of the buy in (even for refreshments or costs), that could be considered a "rake" and that would probably be against gambling laws.

| I thought about that and have told everyone that there is a $50 buy-in with $5 of the buy-in being a refreshments "donation". I may end up taking it down to about $25 a person if I don't get enough interest. We are looking at doing it as a end of summer party and will be doing it the labor day weekend. Is $25 a better buy-in?
