| Prior to the advent and common use of ultrasound to allow parents to learn the gender of the child before it was born, it was common to have bets on what it would be. Now that ultrasound is so common, would any bookies still take this bet?

| You could still bet on it, but it's harder to make a good guess if they find out in the middle of the pregnancy (that's when they learn it, right? We didn't have ultrasounds routinely when my kids were born). Part of the fun is looking at the belly and taking a guess based on the carry.

People still make these bets, or at least they did with both of my pregnancies. They simply pay out after the ultrasound. Not sure what they would have done if the ultrasounds were wrong, though!

Some of my friends do still make bets like this. Instead they just make the bet before the ultrasound and in case the ultrasound is wrong they don’t pay out until after the birth.

Ok yes, that makes sense-just place the bet at the start of the pregnancy and pay out at ultrasound, aroung 18-22 weeks. You make a good point though, sometimes the ultrasound is wrong, or cannot show the gender!

| Bookies or not, it is still fun. I know parents too who insist on not wanting to know beforehand the gender of the baby. They want the surprise too.

There is no doubt this one has been around for a long time coming. I think the closest next in line would be when a couple marry how long it will take before the two become a three if you get my drift. I love betting more on how many names the parents will go through before deciding or not too.
