Papa is not a happy camper right now. After getting clobbered by the Dutch and now with a barely salvaged tie with Romania Italy has to win it's next game against France or they are going home early. Even though my Dad embarrasses me when Italy wins I still hope they pull it out and advance to the next round.

This happens every World Cup in Montreal. Every ethnic community is crazy for the national team from their country of origin. The evening news will always carry a segment showing some people hanging out of the window of a car wavy their flag blaring their horns and yelling themselves horse. One of those idiots is my Dad. Every time Italy wins he's out there with the flag. At times like that I pretend we're not related. When they lose he goes into mourning sits quietly in his livingroom nursing a cold one... or five or six. I love my Papa and I actually like sports but I just can't get that crazy about it.

I am originally from England although I have been living in the States for a long while now, and what shocked me when I first came here was how much more important professional soccer was back in Europe. How important is soccer in your country? How much attention do people pay to tournaments like the World Cup?
