One of the baby's gut instinct is that the breast if the mother is his or her way of getting food. Now when it comes to gambling, I think this kind of gut instinct is learned and not a skill that people are born with.

RE: Choices

I would have to disagree SlickChick-gut instinct IS something that you are born with, it just may not be very good. But if you are training it as such, then you are learning over those hours or years to read the opponents, or the deck or deal, and are reading these signs instead of listening to your gut.

RE: Choices

Gut feeling isn't a skill you are born with. Its something honed over hundreds of hands and watching the outcome. The more you play the better your gut feeling will serve you. Being decisive in choices will help also, which isn't always possible when real money is on the line. Practice online or in person without betting for real money. Bet and keep track of winnings but don't do it foranything other than the experience and you'll find your gut gets better.

RE: Choices
Azaria (2/21/2008)
I think that the best thing to do is keep trying. Keep playing, get some more experience, and it will come to you more naturally.
This is also what I would advice in this matter. Being good in playing poker cannot be done overnight. It takes a lot of experience and games in order to know that your gut feeling will tell you that you are the winner.

RE: Choices

I think that the best thing to do is keep trying. The more you play and the more often you are in situations, the more better and faster your choices will be. Every situation may be different, but you can pull on previous decisions and situations, learning from the bad ones. :)

RE: Choices
FreeSpin (2/10/2008)
So then it would seem that my gut is failing me! I just do not do well at this game-perhaps it is time for me to give up playing for cash and just enjoy the other available entertainments?
Obviously it is not only the gut feeling which you should follow. There is a wide scope for the choices you make and when you should make them. Of which most of them differ person to person.

I think a good tip would be to put your opponent on a hand as soon as you start off.

RE: Choices

So then it would seem that my gut is failing me! It does seem like the majority of gambling and betting is based on gut feelings. It's normal to have those types of feelings, do don't worry. ;)

RE: Choices

A good portion of the choices is gut feeling. You lowest hand could be the winner if the other players have nothing.

Choices

Try as I might I can't get the hang of poker particularly well. For that reason I play mainly for fun.

The problem that I have is that I can never decide when the option comes up, which hand to play. If it is a choice of going one way or another I just can't decide which way to go and obviously when you are the table that hurts you.

How do you make those choices, and fast? Is there a formula?
