Here, restaurants have really been struggling since the smoking bans were enacted. Since they didn't bother fighting the law, I think it serves them right.

RE: Smoking in Casinos (mainly slots)

They should have a seperate room for those who smoke, with an air purification system. People who smoke will quit coming if they are not allowed to smoke.

RE: Smoking in Casinos (mainly slots)

I agree. I hate going into a casino and walking out smelling like an ash tray when I dont even smoke.

Our casino does have a non smoking room. It is so tiny that there is never any slots opened.

RE: Smoking in Casinos (mainly slots)

As a non-smoker myself, I can't stand being in closed spaces with people who smoke. It really makes me physically ill. I have nothing against smokers who wish to go outside to smoke. It's just in small confine areas that I don't like.

RE: Smoking in Casinos (mainly slots)

One of the Detroit casinos (I forget which, it's been awhile since I last went) has an entire non-smoking floor. Whenever i've been there, it's been the most crowded floor in the whole place. You'd think they would get a clue and make more nonsmoking areas.

RE: Smoking in Casinos (mainly slots)

Louise,
I have heard that same argument for a lot of things (clubs, bars, etc.) but once people get over the initial shock of it they are right back to going to them. I think the casinos may lose some money but I also think it would open the door for even more people who don't frequent them for that very reason.

Chris
RE: Smoking in Casinos (mainly slots)

If they outlawed smoking people wouldnt go to the slots as much which would mean the casinos would lose money!

RE: Smoking in Casinos (mainly slots)

When I posted this I thought I would open the door to a lot of people who would blast me about smoker's rights, etc. I'm glad a lot of folks have the same idea. It makes a night out at a casino a miserable experience.

Maybe someone should make a completely smoke-free casino and prove them all wrong!

L2P

RE: Smoking in Casinos (mainly slots)

In Michigan where I live, the House and Senate have almost passed a bill that will put a statewide ban on smoking in public. This will include any building that is open to the public. The casinos in Detroit are upset because they feel it will put them at a disadvantage to the Native American run casinos as they will not be affected by this ban. The reservation doesn't count as part of the state and they have their own rules. I think it is a great idea because I can't count the number of times I have been in the casino and started coughing because of too much smoke.

RE: Smoking in Casinos (mainly slots)

Yes, the slots are about the worst place of all for smoking. Sometimes you'll find a machine that looks like an ashtray even from someone being careless. I can't stand it!

RE: Smoking in Casinos (mainly slots)
cockdice (6/12/2008)
This must be a flaw in the thinking of our legal luminaries because there is very little private about casinos these days. The no-smoking laws for all public spaces should apply and the casinos could create smoking rooms and booths.
I don't know many places that would be willing to spend the money splitting their place up like that. While I think its a decent idea, I'm not sure it will be anything more than that - an idea.

RE: Smoking in Casinos (mainly slots)

I have the same issues. I am an ex smoker. I quit five years ago. Whenever I get around them, I get disgusted from it. I simply don't like being around it anymore. I, too, have been known to leave a casino if the smoke gets too bad.

RE: Smoking in Casinos (mainly slots)

This must be a flaw in the thinking of our legal luminaries because there is very little private about casinos these days. I've seen, what I believe are regulars, sitting at a machine and chain smoking while they play. It never fails that if I find a nice area then a smoker will surely appear.

L2P
