Not a good time for US casinos

The economy is really taking its toll on the supposedly recession-proof industry. First Tropicana files for bankruptcy, now more casinos around the country are doing or thinking of the same thing. Stocks have plummeted for most US based gambling companies. Tough times for US gambling concerns, that's for sure.

Tribal Casinos?

Here in the Kansas and Oklahoma region, most of the casinos are located on reservations and are tribal-run. What are your thoughts about these type of casinos?

I'm thinking that given the economic picture in the US and all the news I've seen with the casinos declining revenues and dropping stock prices, the casinos will probably start going to extraordinary lengths to get our business. Has anyone received or seen any super deals from the casinos yet?

Licensing

How tough are the licensing requirements for gambling establishments? I know that when I was assistant manager in a pub we had to keep an eye out, to make sure no one was gambling on premises-yet we had slot machines. So what is the difference between licensing criteria?

Short Changed?

I'm pretty much positive that it's not been deliberate though certain friends who are conspiracy theorists believe that it's a ploy to get our money faster. But have you ever been short changed on your credit line at the casino? Either charges that you didn't place on your bill, at times that you weren't there, or maybe real short changing when breaking larger notes?

I love to go gambling on Weeknights ~ actually week days, the best. The reason is because the casino in our area is always packed on the weekends so it is harder to find machines that I like to play.

Every once in a while I see someone playing two or even three slot machines at once. I guess they think it increases their odds of winning, much like little old ladies with 10 bingo cards in front of them.

Do you think playing more than one machine, at the same time, actually increases your odds of winning, or do you think it is just a vulgar display of useless greed?

Detroit, MI Casinos

I happen to live near Detroit, and so the closest casinos for me are the Detroit casinos--MGM Grand Detroit, Greektown, and Motor City Casino. I'll be honest, though, I don't like them! They don't strike me as offering the sort of elegant, thrilling experience that a casino should. They're crowd-drawers full of slot machines and fat tourists. Blech.

Has anyone else been to these casino, who has a different opinion?

Going to a new Casino

When I first visited Vegas I had no clue that the casino were open 24/7, but the real shock was that there was no "last call for alcohol"!

Luckily, I am not a big drinker. You could really hurt yourself!

Taking advantage of packages

I live in Michigan and there are several casinos around me. When I go up north to visit family we often go to one that is really close to the Michigan/Wisconsin border. They have a bus that runs from several different locations and it costs $5! I love this as it saves us gas money plus they give us free money to play on certain machines that then pay out in cash if you win. The last time we went I cashed out over $30 which I used to play on the rest of the slot machines for the rest of the night. Anyone know of any other good packages like this?

I am seeing a ton of tv ads running lately and I don't really live near many land casinos but for the most part they are hitting the tv stations like nothing else. I think in about a 1/2 hour time span I seem 4 all on different channels (some local and some not). I wonder if they are trying to make sure people don't forget about the casinos while the economy is kinda struggling right now.

Leaving the casino feeling cheated

When I say leaving the casino while feeling cheated, I mean that you actually feel as if you were cheated somehow. Simply losing a lot is not my idea of being cheated. When you feel like you actually had something taken from you that you deserved, that is what I am referring to. That empty, queasy feeling...that something did not go as planned. Anyone know what I mean?

Winning without spending

When we go to the casino, my sister rarely gambles. She walks around and looks at all the slots.

There are many times that others have left the machine without cashing out.

Last time we went, she got $99 that someone left in the machine!

I use to laugh at her doing this, now I join her.

I was reading an article earlier where some of the Indian tribes in the US were going to allow gambling by minors as it's not against their tribal gaming compacts. I do hope they rethink this as I don't think it's a good idea at all.

With auto plants closing and 500 year floods, we are all feeling the pinch, with a bit of panic, from unrelenting disasters and increasing oil and power costs.

Do you think all of these factors will combine to finally shut down some of the marginal casinos in Michigan, Atlantic City, and other venues in the midwest and along the eastern seaboard?

We went to Vegas about 6 years ago and were having a great time. Someone come up and asked us if we wanted to look at a condo for tickets to a show. We figured why not as we weren't planning on getting show tickets. What a mistake. Next thing I know I'm in a room with other schmucks signing my life away. It was all so fast and so slick that I remember few of the details.

I prefer Atlantic City for the simple fact that it is much closer to where I live than Las Vegas is. While Las Vegas has a number of advantages over AC, I still will go to Atlantic City because I know it so well.
