One downside of using play money to practice for real poker playing is that you may develop a habit of playing every hand dealt instead of folding because there is no real consequence.
Beware! Any other downsides you want to add?

That's a good one, I never really thought of that. I guess you just have to pretend that you are playing with real money to avoid getting too used to it.

| I have had that problem too but I try to think of it as real money. Another downside of play money is that unless you are playing with an online casino that lets you convert to real cash then even win you win big it doesn't really matter.

| I would just say if you're going to go into a tournament with no limits / no amount you have to enter with, bring your own set budget amount, and don't go higher - no matter how good you are.

| Another big downside is that the others will not be as cautious as with real money. Some will go all in for fun, that type of thing. I try to pretend it's real. Then I get the practice I want.

| I find its easier to attach some type of value to the fake money or tournament winner to make it more realistic. If loser buys dinner or drinks then you're more likely to try harder and take it a bit more serious.

| I've never found a problem with this in truth-instead I find that there is great value in being able to practise my plays. I can see though how others might have trouble with this.

| I've never had a problem with it, but my boyfriend blew a bunch of money our first night in Vegas at a table. He later said he thought it was playing with chips at home that did him in.. he didn't connect it with real money in his head. That was a learning experience.
