| I live near a dog track where there's quite a lot of betting going on. I have yet to go as I wouldn't begin to know how to decide which dog to bet on. Does anyone here bet on dogs or horses without knowing a lot about the animals? Is there any secrets to picking winners or is it mainly luck?

| I have played the ponies as you put it, more than a time or two. I don't think it's luck at all, you can spend a little time researching and so learn what horse and jockey are good, and under what conditions they perform the best. With some time, most of the luck element can be removed.

| With the dogs you don't want to pick a really smart dog. When I was in college we were close to a dog race track. One of my friends was there when one of the dog figured out that if it ran the other way it could actually catch the 'bunny'. Only problem is the 'bunny' is made of metal and their head on collision killed the dog.

| I've played the ponies a couple times (trotting races only) but a good friend of mine explained the entire thing so it wasn't such a scary ordeal. By the third race I was ready to place my first wager and won 50cents, lol. Not too good but not bad considering.

| When I was a lot younger I used to spend the night at my grandmothers every now and again. When I was about 13 or 14, my grandmother started taking me to the track on occasion. She also tried to teach me how to bet on the ponies and drink beer from a Flintstones Jelly glass. I never really got into betting at the track but I do really miss my grandmother. She was a pretty cool old lady.
