We play a monthly game where we rotate to different houses each month. It is usually a lot of fun but lately I find myself sick and tired of all of the crazy games and wild cards. Why can't they just play poker? I've actually gone to taking my ante out of the pot if they call wild cards but it makes for some tense times. Any one else tired of "kiddie poker" like this?

There are few things that are so unpardonably neglected in our country as poker. The upper class knows very little about it. Now and then you find ambassadors who have sort of a general knowledge of the game, but the ignorance of the people is fearful. Why, I have known clergymen, good men, kind-hearted, liberal, sincere, and all that, who did not know the meaning of a "flush." It is enough to make one ashamed of the species. ~Mark Twain

I am not sure how many types of games you are playing but if you really want to play with the big ums maybe you should ask those you are playing against why they are holding back?

I'm not really sure what you mean by holding back. I'm just tired of playing a game of seven card stud for example and someone says deuces and one-eyed jacks are wild. It drives me nuts!

A fellow I used to date would play poker every Saturday night during the summer months. I tried joining in but couldn't fathom why they couldn't just use basic rules without all the tailoring that went on.

I feel your pain.

When I used to play with my brothers that would always end up happening and I agree it is annoying. I figured it got worse the more bored everyone got.

I hate what you call "kiddie poker" and refuse to play in games like that, friendly or otherwise. I believe wild cards are there for people who have no idea what they are doing and to take a lot of the skill out of the game.

If you're playing casual poker with friends, what's the harm? I mean, what are you there for: to "win big bucks," or to spend an evening shooting the breeze with buddies?

I am tolerant to a point on games with wild cards but if it gets out of control I'll definitely say something. I also hate holding what would normally be a strong hand only to lose when someone has junk but 5 of a kind!
