I have a friend who drops $100 a week on lottery tickets - scratch tickets, Powerball - you name it. Granted he can afford it so it is harmless in his instance but I just can't imagine blowing that amount of money all the time like that. Anyone do that here? Or know someone like that?

I had a friend in high school who was like this. He didn't even have a real job-he did a paper round and spent everything he earned on cards-it was really sad.

My father would do this, anywhere from 100 to 300/week on them and I never got it. My mother liked the normal scratch off and he did straight lotto numbers. I never fully understood it at all. I would much rather play a game, than a chance type game.

I guess my friend isn't alone in his obsession then. I just can't imagine dropping that kind of cash on something that has the same chance of winning as getting struck by lightning!

I college friend of mine often said that the lottery was "a tax on people who are bad at math." I have to agree. I don't know of a single person like that, who drops mega cash on lottery tickets, who has recouped their long-term investment with winnings. Instead, all the winners you hear about on the news are casual players who buy one or two tickets a week, or even just bought one randomly!

Madness surely they could find something better to do with their money? How much do they actually win back?

NEVER!  I can't ever imagine spending that much a week on lottery tickets.

My son loves to buy lottery tickets.  He doesn't spend that much, but he does generally win when he plays!
