That's a good point. Machines break down often, and people can lose money when they do. If choosing to play the new machine reduces that risk then I would rather do that.

A lot of times they just replace parts of the machine to give it an updated look to try and draw more people to play. They also will move them around the floor a bit to try and get machines that aren't being played much to be played more often. It is just one more way for them to make money.
