What do you think of the naysayers who claim that gambling is a bad thing for society? They talk a good argument, including "statistics" such as the number of people addicted to gambling, an increase in debt and crime in areas near casinos, that it makes the poor even poorer, etc. What do you think about these arguments?

Yes there are pros and cons. The pluses are that there are boosts to the economy when a casino opens up in that area. That's a good thing. But no one can argue the risks of addiction-the difference is that risk is personal, not society wide.

I think like many fine ideas the implementation makes it less than it could be. Gambling is a fine way to spend some time, if you are responsible. This also helps deal with some of the other issues mentioned but instead people are only human and weak in character and we blame gambling for it.

Of course there's always the downside to gambling and casinos, but unless people are gambling their entire life savings away, there are many other things they could otherwise be doing that are a lot worse. Everything has a downside if it's not done responsibly or in moderation.

A lot of people, and families have unfortunately been hurt by the excesses of gambling. There isn't a lot we can do about that, we just have to make sure that we don't get sucked in ourselves. Don't take things too far.

Crime can come around just any business out there, but think of all the people a casino can give jobs to. I know many people that use their "street skills" and can get a job at any casino, but b/c of the same SS's thats the only type of job they can get.
