Try as I might I can't get the hang of poker particularly well. For that reason I play mainly for fun.
The problem that I have is that I can never decide when the option comes up, which hand to play. If it is a choice of going one way or another I just can't decide which way to go and obviously when you are the table that hurts you.
How do you make those choices, and fast? Is there a formula?

| A good portion of the choices is gut feeling. You lowest hand could be the winner if the other players have nothing.

You have a good point about the gut feelings. It does seem like the majority of gambling and betting is based on gut feelings. It's normal to have those types of feelings, do don't worry.

| So then it would seem that my gut is failing me! I just do not do well at this game-perhaps it is time for me to give up playing for cash and just enjoy the other available entertainments?

FreeSpin (2/10/2008) So then it would seem that my gut is failing me! I just do not do well at this game-perhaps it is time for me to give up playing for cash and just enjoy the other available entertainments?Obviously it is not only the gut feeling which you should follow. There is a wide scope for the choices you make and when you should make them. Of which most of them differ person to person. I think a good tip would be to put your opponent on a hand as soon as you start off.

I believe part of being able to choose quickly comes with time. The more you play and the more often you are in situations, the more better and faster your choices will be. Every situation may be different, but you can pull on previous decisions and situations, learning from the bad ones.

| I think that the best thing to do is keep trying. Keep playing, get some more experience, and it will come to you more naturally.

Azaria (2/21/2008) I think that the best thing to do is keep trying. Keep playing, get some more experience, and it will come to you more naturally.
This is also what I would advice in this matter. Being good in playing poker cannot be done overnight. It takes a lot of experience and games in order to know that your gut feeling will tell you that you are the winner.
