Accountant fleeced £1.5 million from clients to satisfy betting habit

By Ben Moss

An accountant reportedly stole £1.5 million from clients in order to satisfy his insatiable thirst for gambling according to the Daily Mirror.

David Atkinson of Heywood Lancashire promised his customers high-interest investments but instead stole the money in order to subsidise a mounting gambling addiction.

The accountant admitted 15 counts of theft at Bolton Crown Court, and then asked for a further 58 to be taken into consideration.

One of Atkinson’s victims told the Mirror: “We trusted him with everything.”

The defendant will be sentenced in February and remanded in custody until then, but Judge William Morris suggested a jail term was inevitable.
