Irregular betting patterns lead to UEFA investigation

By Ben Moss

Bulgarian referee Anton Genov faces a UEFA investigation after a glut of irregular betting patterns emerged over the international friendly fortnight last month.

The match in question was contested between Macedonia and Canada, during which four penalties were awarded, two to each side, during the former’s 3-0 win.

Genov has since been suspended from international matches pending an investigation.

A UEFA spokesman said yesterday: “Following obvious irregular betting patterns on the Macedonia v Canada (friendly) on 14 November, and after interviewing the referee in question, UEFA has decided not to appoint Anton Genov to any European matches until further notice while more investigations are carried out.”
