Frustrated Casino workers strike in Sydney
The Sydney Morning Herald today report that staff at the Star City Casino have voted to strike amid a pay dispute with their employers. The industrial action is believed to relate to frustration over a two per cent pay rise, and the action will occur over the next few days unless the dispute is settled by management.
The LHMU New South Wales secretary Mark Boyd issued the following statement: “Star City staff have decided on strike action because they are frustrated by the casino's unfair wage offer and management's refusal to listen to them,”
“The casino put its offer to a vote of all staff in September and earlier this month. Star City staff voted overwhelmingly `no' twice to the casino's unfair pay offer.”
“Star City is refusing to listen to its staff who just want a decent pay rise and don't want to lose any of their conditions.”
“The decision to consider action is not taken lightly but staff feel it is their last resort.”
The Sydney Morning Herald suggests no-one was available for comment at Star City, however anger seemingly arose after the Casino’s figures suggested they had produced excellent financial results for the last quarter.
Quarterly revenue is reportedly up 11.6%, while Star City are spending an estimated $575 million renovating the site.
