Omaha poker is the second most popular version of online poker, after Texas Holdem. Like Texas Holdem, Omaha is a community card game, where players have to make the best five-card hand. There are two main variants of this poker game, Omaha High and Omaha Hi-Lo, which is a split pot game. You can find both limit and no limit Omaha games. Betting in limit Omaha would be more structured. The rules of this poker variant are very easy to learn. Once you get acquainted with them, wining would not be very difficult.
Basic Omaha Rules
Omaha is a draw poker game where each player has to use the hole cards and the five community cards on the table to make the best hand possible. The betting rounds in Omaha are similar to those of Texas Holdem. The players can use only 3 of the 5 community cards, and unlike in Texas Holdem, they are dealt with 4 hole cards instead of 2. Also, the five card hand that a player makes should consist of exactly two hole cards and three community cards.
Betting structure
Omaha starts with the blind bets, which is followed by the pre-flop bet. There is another betting round after the 3-card flop, followed by the turn, where the bets are doubled. The minimum bet amount remains the same (double the initial bet) in the river. The maximum raises are limited to 3 or 4 during all rounds, but if the play ends up with two players, there is no limit to the raises.
The blinds
The game begins with the blind bets, where the small blind is placed by the player on the left of the dealer, and the big blind is placed by the player left of him. The small blind is around half of the minimum bet and the big blind is equal to the minimum bet. Considering it’s a $2/4 limit Omaha table, where the betting increments would be $2 or $4, the minimum bet in the game would be $3. The small blind would be around $1, and the big blind would be $3.
The remaining players do not place any bets during the blinds. After the blinds are placed, 4 hole cards are dealt face down to each player.
Pre-flop betting
The small blind receives the first card and the dealer gets the last. After each player gets 4 cards, the first round of betting begins. The player to the left of the big blind can either call or raise the big blind. All the other players can fold, call, or raise, while the small blind can either call or raise. Continuing with the above example, the small blind can call with $1. If no one has raised, the big blind, who happens to be the last player to bet, can either raise or check.
The Flop
The flop cards are the community cards that are dealt in the middle of the poker table. There are five community cards, three cards face up and two face down. Considering the folds, the next active player after the dealer gets to bet first after the flop. The minimum bet in this round remains $3.
Turn
In the turn, after the betting round post flop, the dealer turns another community card face up, leaving the players with 4 face up community cards. Active players have to bet a minimum of $6 in this round, which is double the minimum. Again, the active player to the left of the dealer has to start the bets in this round.
River
The final round, or the river, is when the last community card is turned face up by the dealer. The minimum bet amount remains $6 in this round, but can be raised by 3 or 4. In case there are only two players left at river, then there is no limit for the raises.
Show
The winner in Omaha is one who has the best five card hand. Two of those cards must come from the hole cards and three must come from the community cards. In case of a tie, the pot is split between the players, because there is no 6th card or tie-breaker in this game.
Like in any other poker variant, hand selection plays an important role in winning or losing money in Omaha poker. So be sure to learn about the best hands in this game, and how you can use your cards to create a winning hand. While the game may seem complex in the beginning, you will find that it is easier the more you practice. So take time to practice this variant, if the online casino offers fun money poker. Or, start off with low stake tables to keep your losses to a minimum while you learn.
