French Open top seed and new world No1, Maria Sharapova, gave a less than convincing performance to overcome fellow Russian Evgeniya in the second round. Sharapova eventually won 6-1, 3-6, 8-6 but struggled in blustery conditions in Paris.

Sharapova defeats nervy Ivanovic to claim Australian Open title
Maria Sharapova sent out a message of intent to her rivals as she began 2008 by collecting the Australian Open title with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Serbian Ana Ivanovic. After her demolition at the hands of unseeded Serena Williams in last year's final, the 20-year-old Russian went one step better to claim her third Grand Slam success.

Djokovic 'amazed' at straight sets victory
Novak Djokovic admitted he was amazed to beat world number one Roger Federer in straight sets to reach the Australian Open Final. The 20-year-old Serb, seeded three, was in stunning form as he completely dominated to win 7-5 6-3 7-6 (7-5), and he will now meet unseeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Sunday's Final.

Djokovic stuns Federer to reach Australian Open Final
Novak Djokovic produced a superb performance to stun world number one Roger Federer in their Australian Open semi-final, winning in straight sets, 7-5 3-6 7-6 (7-5). The Serbian, seeded number three, now has a fantastic opportunity to win his first Grand Slam when he takes on unseeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final on Sunday.

Tsonga through to face Nadal in semi-final
A spectacular display of power hitting from the unseeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga saw the Frenchman ease his way past Mikhail Youzhny and into the semi-final of the Australian Open. Tsonga, who had already beaten Andy Murray and Richard Gasquet, simply had too much power for his Russian opponent as he triumphed in straight sets.

Maria Sharapova produced arguably the most stunning performance of her career to date as she cruised past world number one Justine Henin 6-4 6-0 in the Australian Open quarter-final.The Russian ace won the final seven games to seal the victory and will now meet fifth seed Jelena Jankovic in the last four.

Nadal through to semi-final stage
Rafael Nadal expressed his relief after overcoming Finland's Jarkko Nieminen to seal his place in the semi-finals of the Australian Open. The Spaniard, who fought off two set points in the opening set, prevailed 7-5 6-3 6-1 to set up a last four clash with either Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Mikhail Youzhny.

Jelena Jankovic overcame a painful thigh injury to defeat defending champion Serena Williams 6-3 6-4 to reach the Australian Open semi-finals. The Serbian ace recovered from a slow start to overcome her American opponent who was troubled by a large blister throughout the contest.

Djokovic beats home-boy Hewitt on way to quarters
Novak Djokovic beat home favourite Lleyton Hewitt to go through to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open. The number three seed triumphed in straight sets, 7-5 6-3 6-3 as he took advantage of a low-key display from Hewitt who appeared drained from his previous match against Marcos Baghdatis which finished at 4.34am.

Venus to meet Ivanovic in Australian Open quarter
Venus Williams powered through to the quarter final of the Australian Open with a pertinacious victory over Poland's Marta Domachowska on Monday. The American, seeded eighth in Melbourne, twice came back from a break down in the opening set on her way to a 6-4, 6-4 win.
