Kovalainen happy with third
Heikki Kovalainen revealed his delight at securing third place on the grid at Hockenheim after running off the track on both of his qualifying laps. The McLaren driver raced across the gravel trap on the way into the stadium on his opening lap in Q3 before running wide across the grass at the final corner on his second.

Hamilton eyes McLaren one-two
Lewis Hamilton insists he and team-mate Heikki Kovalainen will be going all out to secure a McLaren one-two at Sunday's German Grand Prix. Hamilton, who claimed his third pole position of the season during qualifying at Hockenheim, believes McLaren can dominate the race with Kovalainen starting two places further back.

Hamilton takes pole at Hockenheim
Lewis Hamilton produced a stunning final lap to snatch pole position from Felipe Massa in the final second of qualifying at Hockenheim. The McLaren driver clocked a lap of 1:15.666 to claim the ninth pole of his career and his third of the season.

Cavendish wins second stage of Tour de France
Mark Cavendish produced a stunning sprint finish to win stage 8 of the Tour de France - and in the process became only the second Briton to win two stages of the Tour in the same year. Cavendish won the fifth stage on Wednesday and repeated the trick in Toulouse.

Wigan sell Granqvist to FC Groningen
Wigan have sold defender Andreas Granqvist to Ducth club FC Groningen for a fee of around £800,000. The 23-year-old has signed a four-year deal after spending the end of last season on loan at his former club, Helsingborgs IF, and he was in the Sweden squad that was knocked out of Euro 2008 at the group stage.

McClaren signs Chelsea defender Rajkovic on loan
FC Twente boss Steve McClaren has confirmed a deal which will see Chelsea defender Slobodan Rajkovic spend the next season on loan at the club. The former England manager says the 19-year-old - who has yet to make his first-team debut at Stamford Bridge - first came to his attention while making 13 appearances on loan at PSV last season.

Cavendish wins Stage 5 of Tour de France
Great Britain rider Mark Cavendish has won the fifth stage of the Tour de France. In a stage lasting 232km, the longest of this year's Tour, going from Cholet to Châteauroux, the 23-year-old became the first Brit to win a stage since 2003 as he came out on top in a sprint finish.
