Heikki Kovalainen has been given the backing of the McLaren team, despite failing to chase down the Toro Rosso of Sebastian Vettel at last weekend's Italian Grand Prix. The Finn, who finished second in the wet at Monza, was unable to make the most of his superior car and never looked like wrestling the lead away from the German driver.

Alonso: Stewards right to strip Hamilton of victory
Fernando Alonso has re-opened his war of words with Lewis Hamilton by insisting that his former McLaren team-mate deserved the stewards' penalty that deprived him of victory in the Belgian Grand Prix last weekend. Hamilton was given a 25-second penalty after the race for cutting a chicane while dueling with Kimi Raikkonen two laps from the end.
