Ashton likely to stay on in new role - Baron
Brian Ashton is likely to accept the role of head of the National Academy of the RFU, according to RFU Chief Executive Francis Baron. Ashton was this week sacked as Head Coach of the senior England side to make way for Martin Johnson.

Henry defends All Blacks' World Cup performance
New Zealand coach Graham Henry has defended his team and in particular captain Richie McCaw following the results of an independent review into the All Blacks' ill-fated World Cup last year. Henry's side, big favourites for the trophy, were knocked out at the quarter-final stage after losing 18-20 to hosts France.

Smit retained as South Africa skipper
John Smit has been retained as South African captain after leading his side to World Cup glory, new coach Peter De Villiers has confirmed. The hooker, who plays his club rugby for French side Clermont Auvergne, was Jake White's skipper as South Africa won the William Webb Ellis trophy in Paris in October.

Dallaglio retires from international rugby
Lawrence Dallaglio has announced his retirement from international rugby for the second time. The former England captain will end his club career with Wasps at the end of this season. The 35-year-old back-rower, who played every minute of England's successful 2003 World Cup campaign, had previously retired in 2004 from international rugby.

Disappointed White to step down as Boks coach
Jake White today confirmed he will leave his post as South African coach when his contract expires on December 31. White, who led the Boks to the World Cup title in France earlier this month, released a statement at a news conference in Cape Town two days after his name was omitted from the shortlist for the coach's job.

Catt thinks Ashton can success after all
Mike Catt has diluted his scathing comments about Brian Ashton, and has now backed the England coach to continue his success at the helm, with the right help around him. The 36-year-old utility back, who propelled England to an emotional second consecutive World Cup Final earlier this month, had made the original remarks in his autobiography.

Lievremont named new France coach
France have named Marc Lievremont as their new coach. Lievremont, a former flanker for the national side between 1995-1999, succeeds Bernard Laporte, who joined the French government as Junior Minister for Sport after leading his country to a second successive World Cup semi-final defeat to England.
