Gatlin's Olympic hopes boosted
Justin Gatlin's hopes of defending his 100m Olympic crown have been given a boost after it was announced he may be able to compete in the US Olympic trials as a legal dispute over his drugs ban continued. The 26-year-old has served two years of his four-year ban after twice testing positive for banned substances.

Kluft will not defend her heptathlon title in Beijing
Olympic heptathlon champion Carolina Kluft has decided not to defend her title in Beijing later this year, boosting Great Britain's hope of securing a gold medal. Kelly Sotherton andJessica Ennis have been waiting in the wings, and now that Kluft has decided to contest the long jump and triple jump instead they could win gold come August.

Christie won't carry Olympic flame
Linford Christie will not carry the Olympic flame when it passes through London in April, it has been announced. The former Olympic 100 metre champion, the only British athlete to have won the title, was reportedly set to carry the flame through the streets of London as it makes its way to Beijing for the 2008 games.

Berg at the double for Groningen
Marcus Berg scored twice to give Groningen a 2-1 win over struggling AZ on Sunday and heap misery on Alkmaar manager Louis van Gaal.Berg opened the scoring with a stunning volley in the 30th minute before dispatching an 86th minute penalty to give the home side all three points.

Alves' tranfer to AZ held up
The transfer of Afonso Alves from sc Heerenveen to AZ has not been completed yet, according to AZ's technical manager Marcel Brands. Brands confirmed that loose ends had not been tied up in closed in an interview with AD Sportwereld, after Voetbal International had mistakenly revealed the deal had been completed without any problems.

Everton maintained their perfect record in the UEFA Cup with a battling 3-2 victory over AZ Alkmaar in Holland. David Moyes' side led twice, through Andy Johnson and Phil Jagielka, but were twice pegged back before James Vaughan scored the winner with ten minutes remaining to dump their hosts out of the competition.

AZ out in Dutch cup shock
Cambuur Leeuwarden have eliminated AZ in the biggest upset in the Dutch Cup/KNVB Beker first round. Cambuur, from the Dutch First Division, won the match 1-0 thanks to an 81st minute winner by Rachid el Khalifi.

Da Silva back for AZ
AZ Alkmaar have been handed an injury boost after David Mendes da Silva returned to training after six months out with knee ligament damage. The midfielder has been missing since suffering the problem in a game against Groningen back in February.
