Henman ends career with Davis Cup victory
Tim Henman ended his professional career on a high as he and Jamie Murray took England to victory in their Davis Cup tie against Croatia. Victory in both of Friday's rubbers saw Britain take a 2-0 lead, meaning Saturday's doubles encounter would secure their promotion back to the elite of the World Group.
Henman and Murray came from a set behind to beat Mario Cilic and Lovro Zovko 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, 7-5.
Backed by a partisan crowd on Court Number One, Henman bid an emotional farewell to the lawns of SW19.
"It is moments like this and fans like this that I will miss so much," Henman gushed.
"I knew how important this match was for the team, not just me. I've had a few good scripts over the year but this is right up there - hitting the winner to seal the Davis Cup victory is brilliant."
The early exchanges went on serve, with doubles specialist Murray struggling. A delightful lob from Cilic on break point gave the Croatians the first set 6-4.
However Cilic double-faulted at a crucial point in the second set and when Team GB got a lucky bounce off the net-cord, Henman was able to secure the second set with a trademark volley.
Henman and Murray had to fight back from 4-2 down in the third, battling hard to take the set on a tie-breaker.
The British pair raised their game in the final set and it was left to Henman to win the tie with a cross-court forehand, and bring the curtain down on his tennis career.
