Dougherty hails Faldo's leadership skills

Nick Dougherty hailed Nick Faldo's leadership qualities after he masterminded Great Britain and Ireland's victory over Continental Europe in the Seve Trophy. Faldo, who is the European team's captain at the Ryder Cup in Valhalla next year, led his side to a 16.5-11.5 victory after taking eight out of 10 points in the final day's singles matches.

Englishman Dougherty beat Denmark's Soren Hansen on Sunday to help in the convincing win.

And the 25-year-old says Faldo will have the same impact against the Americans next September.

He said: "Nick has been a really great captain and it was useful match-play experience for the Ryder Cup.

"This serves a huge purpose for both the captain and for those of us who haven't been in a Ryder Cup before.

"Nick was able to get to know the guys, which will help, should they make the team.

"It was important for the likes of Phil Archer, Simon Dyson and Graeme Storm, who would never have experienced match play.

"You don't really want your first shot in match play as a professional in the Ryder Cup, so it's great preparation for them."
