Cueto: I would play in the front row in final
Mark Cueto would play prop to feature in the World Cup final, and is delighted to have been given the nod by Brian Ashton to play full back, stepping in for the injured Josh Lewsey. While sympathetic about Lewsey's misfortune, Cueto can't wait to play South Africa, as England attempt to become the only team to successfully defend the World Cup.
The Sales Sharks flyer, 27, will gain his 24th cap on Saturday, having missed out on the quarter-final and semi-final games through injury. Cueto began the tournament as England's full back, however he was criticised after under-par performances against USA and Tonga. He now has a chance to make history.
He said: "It's something I can't put into words. For me, it's an unbelievable opportunity, not having been in the previous two games. It's special.
"For the past two weeks I've been training and keeping myself in good shape and trying to keep my mind focused, waiting for an opportunity to come around.
"I'd play front row to be in the final. Full back is a position I want to play and Brian Ashton wanted me to play."
Cueto offered his commiserations to Josh Lewsey, a long term friend. "I've known Josh for years and we are mates on and off the field.
"It is a massive disappointment for him and a massive disappointment for all of us. I shook his hand and said sorry for what had happened."
