Davydenko fined for 'not trying'

Nikolay Davydenko has been handed a $2000 fine for not trying hard enough during his 1-6 7-5 6-1 defeat by Croatia's Marin Cilic in the St Petersburg Open. The Russian eased through the first-set before enduring on a nightmare run of unforced errors - leading the match umpire to warn him for not trying.

The world number four is currently being investigated by the ATP over a match in August which was surrounded by irregular betting patterns - a game which saw Davydenko retire through injury.

According to the ATP, the Russian was found guilty of a 'lack of best effort' against an opponent ranked 98 places below him.
