EXCLUSIVE: Wheeler - Johnson should take over from Ashton
Leicester Tigers chief executive Peter Wheeler has backed Martin Johnson to take over as England head coach from Brian Ashton. Ashton's position is under scrutiny following scathing criticism from World Cup squad members Lawrence Dallaglio and Mike Catt. Wheeler believes former World Cup winning skipper Johnson is the man to take over.
He said: "Martin has had these four years out and he was frustrated by the early performances by England at the World Cup.
"He feels he can do something. The powers that be are doing a review now and I think he should be someone they are talking to.
"You have to have people who challenge you because if you don't have people who challenge you then you're not going to go anywhere.
"Yes, it may make people feel uncomfortable but all for the right reasons, not the wrong reasons.
"He is an experienced rugby man, he is an intelligent guy. He knows how to get the best out of people.
"He has no experience of coaching or of managing but he has led teams to the highest level."
