Henin finishes year as No1
Justine Henin will finish the year as No1 in women's tennis, and even before the Sony Ericsson Championship - the last tournament of the season - has been played. The Belgian has won nine titles this year, including two Grand Slam titles. A victory in the Madrid tournament will cap off a superb end-of-year for Henin.
She beat Amelie Mauresmo in the 2006 championship final to finish last year as No1 and is on course to do the same this year. Despite missing the Australian Open, Henin returned to defend her French Open title and win her second U.S. Open.
The No1, who is on a 20-match winning streak, is attempting to become the sixth player to win consecutive WTA championships and eighth multiple winner. The last back-to-back champion was fellow Belgian Kim Clijsters.
"I keep coming back to this unbelievable story that impossible is nothing and I proved it again this year. It's been a difficult year," said Henin, who went through a divorce early this year.
Henin returned from that break to post a 58-4 record this year.
She continued: "When I came back to competition in February in Paris it was like I had to start (over) again. I really grew up a lot," she said. "I have no problem to say it's been the best season of my career so far."
