Docherty hails McLeish influence

Alex McLeish has been hailed for transforming the Scottish national team from a bunch of no-hopers to a side on the brink of knocking the world champions out of the race for Euro 2008. McLeish took over from Walter Smith in January and his side know that victory over Italy at Hampden Park on Saturday will ensure their place at Euro 2008.

And Docherty, who briefly managed the national side between 1971-1972, believes that McLeish's faith in his players and his own experience of international football are the main reasons why Scotland have enjoyed an upturn in fortunes.

"He's got a group of players there and he picks them more or less every time," said Docherty, who admitted to being "amazed" by September's 1-0 victory over France in Paris.

"Alex knows his squad and his squad know him. The most important thing is the players look at Alex and they see that he's played international football," he added.

"He's played for his country and captained them on occasions as well. He's been there and done it all which is very important.

"Berti Vogts was also an excellent player, but there is a bond between Alex and his players now that wasn't there before, you can see that."
