Ryder Cup to go out of Europe in 2018 says European Tour Chief
George O'Grady, chief executive of the European Tour Chief, has admitted that the 'home' version of the Ryder Cup could be held outside Europe in future. The competition has only ever been staged in three European countries - England, Spain and Ireland, but could now move further afield.
O'Grady's comments follow the announcement of The Dubai Championship which will be the richest European Tour event when it is introduced at the end of 2009. The season-ending event for the highest ranked players will carry a huge $1.6m prize for the winner.
And when asked if the Ryder Cup could be the next big-name event to move outside Europe, O'Grady said: "Our next two venues are signed up with Celtic Manor and Gleneagles, and we certainly intend to go to the continent of Europe for 2018.
"But in the future I think it's possible."
O'Grady has also responded to Colin Montgomerie's recent call for the European Tour to change its name to the International Tour given the fact events are now being played in Russia, the Middle East and Asia.
The current chief executive refuted the suggestion and said: "We can't at the moment see any reason to change from the European Tour. None of the business partners that we have tell us they want the name European Tour to change."
