EXCLUSIVE: England fans vent their frustration at McClaren

England fans were left seething after watching their team fall to an embarrassing 3-2 defeat by Croatia at Wembley - with a large majority venting their frustration at boss Steve McClaren. The players left the field to a chorus of derision after their failure to qualify for Euro 2008, leaving McClaren's future in major doubt.

England fans left in droves before the final whistle brought a disappointing qualifying campaign to an end, leaving supporters to reflect on might what have been.

But disappointment soon gave way to anger, with McClaren the man to come in for most of the criticism.

"Everybody knows that Steve McClaren was not the FA's first choice and he has proved why he should not have been appointed," said Tony, one of thousands of fuming England fans.

"He is hopelessly out of his depth and we've paid the penalty for not having a manager of international class. He needs to do the honourable thing and resign and then we can move on under a new leader."

But some fans believe the responsibility lies with the players, claiming overpaid Premier League stars do not care about their performances for the national team.

"Some of these players earn more in a week than some of us earn in a lifetime," said Kevin, who travelled down from Sunderland for the match.

"The fans spend a lot of money to follow England and while I can accept losing, I can't accept poor performances from players with so much potential.

"They've let their country down and McClaren will probably pay the penalty with his job. But the players need to take a long, hard look at themselves after failing to qualify."
