McClaren silent over future as England Head Coach

Steve McClaren will not be making any hasty decisions concerning his future as England manager but admitted responsibility for England's shambolic European Championship qualifying campaign which ended with a humiliating 3-2 defeat against Croatia at Wembley.

A goal 13 minutes from time by substitute Mladen Petric terminated England's hopes of joining the European elite next summer as the national side failed to qualify for a major tournament for the first time since 1994.

Graham Taylor was the last manager to suffer that ignominy and his resignation duly followed but McClaren has no immediate plans to follow suit.

He said: "I understand the question but I'm not going to discuss my future. I don't think it is the time so soon after a huge disappointment.

"Ultimately I take responsibility. I said judge me over the 12 games. We deserve to be where we finish and we've not deserved to qualify. That's my job and my responsibility.

"I think it is too early to reflect but I think the mistakes and our start cost us.It was always going to be difficult we had to take risks.

"Ultimately Croatia are a good team and looked like scoring every time they went forward and that's a disappointment for me to concede three goals at Wembley it would have been unthinkable before the game."

The Football Association meanwhile, have issued a statement indicating that a crisis meeting will take place on Thursday to discuss where England go from here. Many critics are demanding a full-scale clear out, including head of the FA, Brian Barwick.
