Shearer not right for England job - Sanchez

Alan Shearer should not be appointed England manager as he has too little experience, according to former Northern Ireland boss Lawrie Sanchez. Shearer, who scored 30 goals for England, has been linked with the job despite having spent the 18 months since his retirement working for the BBC while earning his coaching badges.

And Sanchez, now in charge at Fulham, believes that Steve McClaren's successor must be a manager coming to the end of his career who is looking to take a step back from full-time club involvement.

Although Sanchez insists that a novice manager may not be able to handle the pressure of coaching a national team.

"I'm not ruling out the FA going down that path (of appointing a novice manager) as they probably will do," said Sanchez, whose side face Blackburn at Craven Cottage today.

"They'll say 'Jurgen Klinsmann was successful with Germany, Marco Van Basten and Frank Rijkaard have been reasonably successful with Holland' - they're saying that's the way to go, but you haven't got any experience of, say, dealing with the media.

"Alan Shearer won't have spent 20 minutes with the press after a game. As a player he'll just have said: 'I've played, I've done my bit out on the pitch so see you later'

"For me the ideal scenario is when you take your last job and you win the World Cup, that's the way to do it."

Sanchez continued: "By the time you've reached your late 50's or early 60's and you want to slow down but stay involved in the game, then that's the time to become an international manager.

"If you do that you have 10 days when it's like being a club manager, after which you've got two or three months when you can take your wife away, have a break, and you can do all the things you want to do.

"That's like being a club manager but not all the time, and that's ideal as you can still bring all your experience to bear."
